TrayTweet Help
F.A.Q.
1. I received an error message saying I do not have the version of Java required for the program to run. What do I do?
Visit this website to download the latest version of Java. If you're using Linux, you may also use the terminal to download and install the latest version of Java. I've found that these instructions work well for Ubuntu Linux. For other distributions, Google is your friend.
2. Why can't I login?
There might be a few reasons why you are unable to login:
- The Twitter service could be down. If this is the case, open up your web browser and try to visit the website. If it doesn't load, Twitter might be down, or maybe you have no Internet connection.
- You might have no Internet connection. Again, visiting the Twitter website or some other website should help you troubleshoot if this is the issue.
- Your username or password might be incorrect. Since TrayTweet authenticates your username and password via Twitter, if you forgot your username or password, you will need to take it up with Twitter.
- You might have surpassed the hits threshold allowed by Twitter third-party apps. Twitter only allows you to make 150 requests per hour. If you surpass this number, you will have to wait until the next hour before you can make any other requests. (E.g. if you've hit the limit threshold at 5:45 pm, you should wait to make another request after 6:00 pm). If you logged out during this time, you will not be able to log back into TrayTweet until the limit threshold has been reset. Again, if this happens, please wait and try again.
3. Why did I receive an "over limit" error?
As previously mentioned, Twitter only allows third-party applications to make 150 requests per hour.
4. Why aren't my timelines refreshing?
Please note that timelines only refresh if the timeline window is open or minimized. If you close the Timeline Browser or an individual timeline window (e.g. the timeline of your friend), the timelines will not refresh in order to preserve your hit limit (see above). Otherwise, your timelines should refresh every ten minutes. If your timeline still says "Loading" and it has been more than 5-10 seconds, hit the "refresh" button to reload the timeline manually. If you surpass the hit limit allowed by Twitter (see above), then your timelines will not refresh until the hit limit has been reset (after the next hour).
5. I followed / unfollowed someone, but why hasn't my friends list updated?
There seems to be a slight delay on the Twitter servers before your friends list is updated. Note that your friends list will also update every ten minutes, so if you've just followed / unfollowed someone, your friends list should be updated in a matter of minutes. Alternatively, you can click on "Refresh Friend List" under the "View" menu to manually refresh.
6. Why can't I see all of my friends / followers?
Your friends / followers list will show the latest 100 friends / followers only.
7. Why can't I direct message someone?
Twitter only allows you to direct message people who are following you (your followers). Note that this may not necessarily be your friend! In other words, you may have a friend who you are following but isn't following you; you cannot direct message this person. This is not a limitation of TrayTweet, but a restriction of Twitter.
8. I'm using Linux. When I try to open the JAR file, it opens with the Archive Manager rather than Java Runtime. How do I fix this?
- Right-click on the .jar file
- Click "Properties" in the context menu
- Select the "Open With" tab
- Select "Sun Java <version> Runtime" and hit CLOSE
- You should now be able to double-click launch the JAR
9. How was TrayTweet built?
TrayTweet was built using Java SE 1.6 and the JTwitter API. Thanks JTwitter!
10. I found a bug. What should I do?
Please report all bugs here. In doing so, please specify your operating system, the version of TrayTweet you are using, and how the bug can be reproduced.
